Tabea Frei was born in Mammern, Switzerland. She began playing the violin in kindergarten and gained experience in various orchestral and chamber music formations throughout her childhood.
At the age of fourteen, Tabea Frei made her first soloist debut with the Winterthur Youth Orchestra.
After high school, she began studying violin at the Lucerne School of Music with Prof. Gunars Larsens. This was followed by a master's degree in music education.
In this year she received her first viola lessons. The instrument inspired her and so Tabea Frei decided to change from violin to viola. She subsequently completed two further master's degrees, including the Master Specialised Music Performance Soloist with Prof. Lawrence Power at the Hochschule der Künste in Zurich.
Tabea Frei was a member of the Basel Symphony Orchestra and plays as an adjunct with the Lucerne Festival Strings and the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra.
In 2016, she was a prize winner of the Verao Classico Summer Lisbon competition, whereupon she was given the opportunity to perform a year later with musicians such as Janne Saksala and Radek Baboràk.
Tabea Frei regularly plays in various chamber music formations. She has been invited for projects with Isabel Charisius, Eduard Grach, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Zhou Qian, Orfeo Mandozzi and members of the Ysaÿe Quartet.
She has performed at various festivals including the Lucerne Festival, Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Grafenegg Festival, Seeklangfestival and others.
Tabea Frei, who composed her first symphony during her school years, remains committed to creating and arranging to this day. Together with her trio partners Urban Frey and Paolo D'Angelo, she designs her own concert programs, with which they go on tour. Most recently, they presented the program "The Eight Seasons," a fusion of the four seasons by Antonio Vivaldi with the four seasons by Astor Piazzolla, which ultimately resulted in a unique composition of four seasons.
After concluding their tour with "The Eight Seasons," the trio dedicated themselves to the program "Love Songs," which they have been presenting on stage since 2023.
“First character, then ability.” - Shinichi Suzuki
In this sense, it is Tabea Frei's greatest wish to bring children and adults closer to making music and the joy of music. Tabea Frei is a violin and viola teacher at the Frauenfeld Youth Music School and also provides private lessons in violin, viola, and piano. Additionally, she trains students in the field of music—specifically piano—at the University of Education Schaffhausen.
Only when she gets to know the person, she can discover their abilities and build on them. This in turn strengthens and makes her students happy. This moment leads to an upward spiral, because it creates motivation and motivation is known to be the incentive to continue playing the instrument.
